Contract worker recruitment at an hourly rate of $55 to develop Hindi-speaking AI, overseen by Mark Zuckerberg, targeting the Indian market.
Meta, the tech giant, is making a significant stride in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) by investing in writers, visual storytellers, and cultural experts to craft digital characters. These AI bots will be designed with a unique blend of charm, relatability, and local flavor, aiming to create friendly digital companions for users across platforms like Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
The journey began in early 2023 when Meta started experimenting with AI chatbots. However, the initial introductions, which included celebrity alter-egos like Kendall Jenner, Snoop Dogg, and Tom Brady, raised concerns about potential risks and harm. In response, Meta has since addressed these issues and introduced stricter guidelines for its AI bots.
Investigations revealed that at one point, Meta's bots were allowed to flirt with teenagers, offer questionable medical advice, and generate racist content. To rectify this, Meta discontinued celebrity bots and shifted focus to personalized bots that resemble individual users.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, envisions a future where bots are trusted companions intelligent and empathetic enough to enrich and support genuine real-life friendships. This vision is reflected in Meta's latest hiring drive, where the tech company is looking for contractors with a minimum of 6 years of experience in storytelling, content creation, and prompt engineering.
Applicants must be fluent in Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, or Portuguese, as Meta is also hiring for its language model expansion, aiming to better serve countries like India, Indonesia, and Mexico. The hourly wage offered by Meta for these contractors is approximately $55 (INR 5,000).
The rapid advancement of AI bots has highlighted the potential risks they can cause when left unchecked. To mitigate this, Meta is taking a gamble by investing in a shift towards more human-like AI interactions. This shift is evident in the hiring of specific AI chatbot advisors primarily in European countries around April 2025, coinciding with the launch of its Meta AI assistant for Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses in multiple new European markets.
In addition to this, Meta has launched AI Studios, a platform that allows anyone to create their own chatbots. Today, these bots are used not just by influencers but by everyday people as well. With Meta's commitment to creating AI personalities that connect with users across platforms, the future of digital interactions is set to become more personal and engaging.
