Controlled Terrain: Regulations Regarding Footpath in Armed Safety Zones
On Thursday evening, August 15, 2022, in the heart of Hanau, Germany, a one-handed knife was secured by the police during a control action in the city's weapons ban platform zone.
The incident took place in Castle Park, where a 23-year-old resident of Hanau was found to be in violation of the Weapons Act, as he had a prohibited one-handed knife with him.
The police operation, which took place between 15:00 and 23:00, saw deployment forces on foot patrol in the city centre, particularly in the areas of Freedom Square, Market Square, and Castle Park. A total of 24 people were controlled during the operation.
The weapons ban platform zone, established since August 1, 2025, covers large parts of the city centre, including Freedom Square, Market Square, the Forum Hanau, and Castle Garden. Numerous side streets, passages, and squares are also included in the designated areas, where the carrying of firearms, bladed weapons, knives of all kinds, and electroshock devices is prohibited.
Thomas Leipold, a police spokesman, stated that rules only have an effect if they are enforced. He emphasised that the controls ensure that the weapons ban platform zone is noticeable in everyday life.
