Controversy Erupts as Phil Hellmuth Assails Shaun Deeb Regarding Poker's Top Player Title

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Player of the Year (POY) race in 2025 has been shrouded in controversy, with 18-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth causing a stir with his critical comments towards the eventual winner, Shaun Deeb.

The POY scoring system underwent a significant change in 2024, shifting from counting unlimited cashes to considering only a player's ten best results. This change, aimed at capping the number of cashes that contribute to a player’s POY points, has indeed impacted the dynamics of the competition.

One of the players affected by this rule change was Shaun Deeb. Contrary to accusations of lobbying for this change to benefit himself, Deeb clarified that he had no involvement in altering the POY formula. In fact, he admitted that the new system "hurt me more than it helped" because it punishes players like him who rely on volume and multi-tabling to accumulate many cashes.

Under the new system, Deeb was required to focus on deep runs to improve his top ten results rather than simply accumulating many cashes. His closest competitor, Benny Glaser, accumulated many min-cashes, but Deeb's deep finishes allowed him to replace lower scores in his top ten and maintain a slight edge. In the end, Deeb emerged victorious, winning the 2025 WSOP POY, edging out Glaser and Michael Mizrachi, the latter winning two bracelets but lacking enough deep finishes beyond those.

Despite Deeb's win, Phil Hellmuth posted a controversial video criticizing Deeb's title, claiming that most top 100 tournament players would have given the title to Mizrachi or Glaser. This statement sparked a wave of negative responses from the poker community, with comments such as "Hater of the summer" from Joey Ingram, "This rant seems unnecessarily unfair to and attacking of Shaun" from Jesse Martin, and "Yikes, still time to delete this" from Rachel Arieh.

In response to the criticism, Hellmuth issued an apology, of sorts, for his POY comments. However, he doubled down on his belief that winning bracelets is the most important aspect in the World Series of Poker. The arguments and discussions over the POY award will undoubtedly continue, with Shaun Deeb reiterating that the award is based on points and steady results across the entire series.

Meanwhile, Shaun Deeb has criticized Hellmuth for spreading false information and attempting to hijack Mizrachi's Hall of Fame spotlight. Deeb also denied any involvement in the changes to the PoY formula and emphasized that the POY award isn't about "highlight reels."

In the midst of all this, Ashley Deeb, Shaun's wife, received congratulations for tidying up her husband's tweets. Roberto Romanello supported Deeb's victory, stating that he played by the same rules as every competitor. Daniel Negreanu, one of the few players who thought Deeb was a worthy champion, explained why Hellmuth's "Winners!" comment was off the mark.

As the dust settles, the 2025 Player of the Year award belongs to Shaun Deeb, a testament to his consistent performances and deep finishes throughout the series. Landon Tice, however, criticized the situation, stating that Deeb scored the most points but still lost due to the PoY formula. The poker community will continue to debate the merits of the POY system and the validity of Hellmuth's criticisms in the coming days.

  1. The ongoing discussion in the poker community has extended to the realm of sports-betting, with many speculating on the potential odds for the 2026 WSOP Player of the Year, given the controversies surrounding the 2025 edition.
  2. On a different note, some casino-goers have expressed interest in trying their hand at poker, inspired by the casino-games phenomenon and the saga surrounding the 2025 WSOP Player of the Year.
