Controversy over Palestinian demonstrations in support
Vuelta a España 2025: Eleventh Stage Cancelled Due to Protests
The eleventh stage of the Vuelta a España 2025 was cancelled after a tense situation involving pro-Palestinian protests on Monday. The race jury neutralized the stage three kilometres from the finish in Bilbao due to safety concerns.
The Israel-Premier Tech team, one of the teams targeted by protest actions in previous stages, including being stopped during the team time trial on the fifth stage, announced their intention to continue participating in the race. The team stated that any other course of action would send a dangerous signal to both their own team and all other teams.
The Vuelta organizers prioritized the safety of the riders during the protests and have condemned the demonstrations. They stated their intention to continue working closely with the authorities on the remaining stages of the race. The UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) also criticized the protests and reaffirmed the importance of the political neutrality of sports organizations.
The UCI expressed that sport, and cycling in particular, should never be used as a means of punishment. They showed solidarity and support for the teams, their staff, and the riders during the protests. Spanish media reported four injured police officers and three arrests during the incidents on the eleventh stage.
The stage finish in Bilbao was cancelled because numerous protesters waving Palestinian flags were in the finish area. The Vuelta a España and UCI have also condemned the Palestinian protests that occurred during the eleventh stage. The organizers of the Vuelta a España have stated their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all teams and riders throughout the remainder of the race.
After reaching the three-kilometre mark, the cyclists on the eleventh stage rolled slowly towards the finish in Bilbao. The Vuelta a España 2025 will continue with the twelfth stage on Tuesday. The race is currently led by Primoz Roglic of Slovenia's Jumbo-Visma team.
