Cottbus offers opportunity for Union and Hertha to seek retribution against RB Leipzig
Union Berlin and Arminia Bielefeld will face off once again in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, scheduled for October 28 and 29. This highly anticipated match will take place at Union Berlin's home ground, the Alte Försterei stadium.
Both teams have a history in the Pokal, with Union Berlin dreaming of a final at their home Olympiastadion for years, but yet to achieve it. Last year, Union Berlin suffered a 0:2 defeat against Arminia Bielefeld in the second round, a result they will no doubt be eager to reverse this time around.
Arminia Bielefeld, on the other hand, reached the final last year, only to lose to VfB Stuttgart. They will be hoping to go one step further this season and claim the Pokal for themselves.
Meanwhile, Union Berlin's professional football manager, Horst Heldt, has expressed his delight at having a home game in the Pokal and stated that they want to take full advantage of it.
In the other half of the draw, Hertha BSC will face SV Elversberg again in the second round, following their previous encounter in the second league, which saw Elversberg secure a 2:0 victory.
Elsewhere, Energie Cottbus has advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal for the first time since 2013. However, they face a tough challenge against RB Leipzig, with Leipzig being the clear favourites. Energie Cottbus' best result in the Pokal was reaching the final in the 1996/97 season, where they lost to VfB Stuttgart (0:2).
The round of 16 in the DFB-Pokal is scheduled for early December, with the final set for May 23, 2026, at Berlin's Olympiastadion. The second round matches promise to be exciting, as teams fight for a place in the next stage of the competition and the chance to lift the DFB-Pokal trophy.
