County to make available interactive mobile network coverage map online
The Herford district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has taken a significant step towards improving mobile network coverage within its boundaries. District Administrator Jürgen Müller has expressed his support for network operators to repair the shown supply gaps, acknowledging the importance of stable mobile network coverage for digital education, safe work, and environmental benefits.
In September 2024, data for the map was collected using measurement boxes installed in waste collection vehicles. This innovative method ensured that the data gathered had very few gaps, providing a comprehensive overview of the mobile network coverage in the district.
The data is color-coded according to signal strength and is broken down by providers Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica. The map, created by Luc Niski, offers a transparent overview of the current supply situation in the Herford district, with areas covered by at least one network provider with 4G or 5G accounting for over 98% of the land area. However, there are still some "gray spots" (11% of the land area) where only one, but not all network providers have coverage, and "white spots" (1.4% of the land area) where no 4G or 5G coverage is available.
The map is interactive, allowing citizens to enter their address to see the reception and signal strength in their area. The Herford district cooperated with three active waste management companies in the district – Pre Zero, Berg, and the SWK of the city of Herford – to facilitate this data collection.
The provider of the current measurement data on mobile network expansion in Herford is Netzcheck von Open Signal, and the data were collected in December 2022. The district plans to collect this data regularly from now on, as stated by mobile manager Jan Ahring.
Jürgen Müller considers mobile communication as essential infrastructure, improving connectivity and communication, promoting economic growth, making education more accessible, and relevant for emergency communication. Stable mobile network coverage is also crucial to drive technological innovation forward, he adds.
Birgit Rehberg, head of the responsible department for district development and climate protection, echoes these sentiments, stating that stable mobile network coverage promotes digital education, safe work, and avoids unnecessary trips – a win for people and the environment.
You can find the data on mobile network coverage in the Geoportal (https://geoportal.ourwebsite) under the "Life & Living" tab or via the direct link (https://geoportal.ourwebsite/mobile-network). This move by the Herford district underscores its commitment to addressing mobile network coverage issues and fostering technological advancement in the district.
