COVID-19 makes a comeback with emerging Omicron sub-strains: Experts issue stark warnings about surging infections

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose a significant challenge worldwide, and Turkey is no exception. According to Professor Dr. Ahmet Soysal, global data indicates a trend of increasing cases since early 2025. This rise is particularly noticeable among young children, with the new Omicron subvariants, Nimbus (NB.1.8.1) and Stratus (XFG), being the main culprits.

In the emergency department at a private hospital, Dr. Suleyman Alpar has observed a clear increase in admissions. Symptoms reported include upper respiratory infection, nasal congestion, cough, fatigue, fever, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, sneezing, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea, and sometimes loss of taste or smell. Nimbus, in particular, is notable for causing a sharp, 'razor-like' throat pain. Stratus symptoms are similar and can include hoarseness.

While most cases among children are mild, with fever and upper respiratory symptoms predominating, children with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems should not miss their booster doses. Supportive care and home isolation are usually sufficient for children with COVID-19. However, inpatient wards and ICUs are also seeing more COVID-19 patients, according to Dr. Alpar.

To curb the spread of the virus, people should avoid close contact with sick individuals, keep symptomatic children home from school or daycare, and limit time in crowded indoor spaces. Those with chronic conditions should wear masks and stress the importance of hand hygiene.

In Turkey, the COVID-19 cases for the summer season 2025 were officially reported before the pandemic clinics were closed. Subsequently, suspected COVID-19 patients were directed straight to emergency departments, but no exact official reporting date is provided in the available information. Turkish hospitals are reporting a steady rise in COVID-19 cases during the summer season.

Despite the increase in cases, hospital capacity is not yet overwhelmed. Diagnosis of COVID-19 still relies on scientific testing, with PCR being the most reliable method. Rapid antigen tests are faster but less sensitive.

It's crucial to remember that testing and isolating symptomatic individuals until results are confirmed is essential to controlling the spread of the virus. People should also be vigilant about their health and seek medical attention if they experience any COVID-19 symptoms.

In conclusion, while the rise in COVID-19 cases is concerning, it's essential to take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and others. By following the guidelines and getting vaccinated, we can help slow the spread of the virus and keep our communities safe.
