Petals & Roots: Rachel Bull's Statement Hydrangea Centerpiece

Rachel Bull, Head of Gardens at Homes & Gardens, has shared her latest floral design in the final episode of her Petals & Roots video series. The statement hydrangea centerpiece, inspired by an arrangement she made for a hotel lobby during Halloween, can work in any room of the home.

To create this design, Rachel advises choosing a tall, clear glass vase with a subtle colour and a narrow neck. She suggests using a vase like the one from Anthropologie, and recommends measuring the stem against the vase before cutting to ensure proper length.

The design itself is created in three stages. First, Rachel adds foliage to create a structure for the arrangement. She uses Eucalyptus cinerea and beech branches, cutting the Eucalyptus on the diagonal before placement into the vase. Next, she adds five hydrangeas at varying heights, but suggests adding more for a maximalist look.

Rachel emphasizes the importance of working with seasonal stems for a more natural and sustainable approach to floral design. She also recommends choosing materials wisely for easy professional-looking flower arrangements. For example, she suggests using beech or other leafy foliage of choice for additional height in the hydrangea centerpiece.

Once the foliage is in place, Rachel adds the hydrangeas. To avoid disturbing neighbouring foliage or flowers, she advises twisting the stem in her fingers while removing it. The hydrangea centerpiece can be placed in the center of a large table, on a kitchen island, or as a statement entryway design on a console table.

Rachel prefers subtle shades of pink or taupe for decorative glassware and vases. She also mentions that seasonal ingredients can be used to recreate this hydrangea centerpiece design.

Necessary materials for the hydrangea centerpiece include 5-7 branches of Eucalyptus cinerea, 5 branches of beech, 5-7 stems of large mophead hydrangea, a large glass vase (such as from Anthropologie), scissors or pruning snips (such as Micman professional grade snips from Amazon).

Rachel Bull's Petals & Roots video series airs every Sunday on social media, providing viewers with fresh inspiration for their gardening and floral design projects.
