Cricket India's national team hunting for title sponsor due to approaching betting ban threat
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated a bidding process for the Lead Sponsor Rights for the Indian National cricket team. This move comes after Dream11, the current title sponsor, withdrew from the ongoing bidding process, and the BCCI is preparing to call fresh tenders for a new lead sponsor.
The bidding process, which involves an Invitation for Expression of Interest for National Team Lead Sponsor Rights (IEOI), is open from September 2, 2025, to September 12, 2025. Interested bidders need to pay a non-refundable fee of INR 5,00,000 or approximately $5,700 to show interest via IEOI.
However, not all companies are eligible to participate in the bidding process. The rules prohibit bidders and their group companies from being engaged in online money gaming, betting, or gambling services in India or anywhere in the world. This ban also applies to crypto companies, tobacco companies, and alcohol producers.
Moreover, other companies likely to offend public morals, such as pornography, are also banned from participating. Bidders are also restricted from having any investment or ownership interest in any Person engaged in betting or gambling services in India.
The ban on bidders engaged in any activities/business that is prohibited under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, is not permitted to submit a bid. This Act, which has been approved by both parliamentary houses in India, will result in a complete ban on online gambling in India if signed by the country's president.
The ban on online gambling has already resulted in job cuts with hundreds of people being laid off over the last months. Some real money gaming operators are considering entering new jurisdictions, while others have focused on diversifying their offering and engaging in new business ventures.
The bidding deadline for submission of bid documents is set for September 16, 2025. It remains to be seen who will emerge as the new title sponsor for the Indian National cricket team.
