Criticizes Hung Hsiu-chu for Participating in a Chinese Parade by the DPP
In the heart of Taiwan's political arena, a series of statements from key figures has sparked debate and controversy.
Eric Chu, the current Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT), has made a bold claim, stating that Nationalist forces, led by Chiang Kai-shek, were the main force fighting Japan during World War II. This assertion, while not universally accepted, has reignited discussions about Taiwan's wartime history.
Meanwhile, former KMT legislator Cheng Li-wun has been vocal in his criticism of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He accused the DPP of smearing the motives of Hung Hsiu-chu, former KMT chairwoman, and sowing division and hate across the Taiwan Strait. Cheng further stated that Hung does not wish to turn Taiwan into a second Ukraine.
Hung's recent participation in a military parade in Beijing has drawn criticism in Taiwan, affecting the relations between the KMT and China. However, according to Cheng, Hung understands Beijing's military parade as a commitment to peace, not an intent to trigger an arms race or provoke war in the region.
The controversy surrounding Hung was further fuelled when Eric Chu accused President William Lai of "aping Japanese" for referring to the end of World War II as an anniversary, a statement that brought shame to the nation, according to Chu.
In a related development, Hau Lung-bin, former KMT Taipei mayor, shared that his late father, Hau Pei-tsun, turned down invitations to Chinese Communist Party parades. Hau Pei-tsun viewed their claim of being the main contributors to victory in the war as a usurpation of the KMT forces' achievement. Hau Lung-bin also wrote that the lesson from history is to stay on the path of insisting on peace.
Reporting by Huang Cheng-chia was added to the article, providing a comprehensive overview of the ongoing political discourse in Taiwan. As the country navigates its complex relations with China, the statements from these key figures continue to shape the political landscape.
