Cross-border partnership between Germany and the Czech Republic

In the heart of Europe, the German-Czech border region continues to foster a spirit of collaboration, as evidenced by the recent Regional Forum held in Liberec/Reichenberg, marking the second such event since its inception.

The partnership between the three regions - Bavaria, Saxony, and the Czech Republic - has a rich history, with inter-ministerial working groups in existence for over 30 years. This long-standing relationship has seen the emergence of key authorities and organisations, such as the Euroregion Elbe/Labe, GIZ, BDZ, and various scientific and regional groups, all working towards promoting cross-border cooperation.

The Euroregions, including Neisse-Nysa-Nisa and Euregio Bavarian Forest/Bohemian Forest, play a pivotal role in facilitating cross-border projects and everyday life. These regions have been instrumental in bridging gaps and fostering exchange between the three regions.

The pandemic presented unique challenges to the border region, causing a sudden separation among previously closely connected families, commuters, and businesses. However, it also served to reinforce the desire to further dismantle barriers and promote the integration of the border region. During this period, Germany and the Czech Republic grew closer, with joint aid measures, cross-border exchange of information, and mutual support strengthening their relationship.

In July 2023, Federal Minister Annalena Baerbock travelled to the German-Czech border region, visiting the communities of Vejprty and Bärnstein. During her visit, she met with her Czech counterpart, Jan Lipavský, discussing the experiences of border commuters during the pandemic and successful cooperation between firefighters and police across national borders.

The Regional Forum series includes plenary discussions, workshops, and info sessions, aiming to provide regular impulses for cross-border cooperation. The goal is to establish the Forum as a permanent institution, fostering a continued spirit of cooperation and integration.

Cross-border infrastructure, education and research, and cultural projects are among the numerous approaches to understanding borders as a connection, rather than a division. The German-Czech border region, despite having a national border, exhibits no perceptible distance between the people in communities like Vejprty and Bärnstein, a testament to the strong bond of friendship established on a foundation of trust and cooperation.

This friendship, rooted in the "Treaty on Good Neighborhood" of 1992 and the "German-Czech Declaration" of 1997, continues to grow stronger, as both countries work together towards a more integrated and cooperative future. Over 200 participants from administration, civil society, economy, and science attended the Regional Forum in Chemnitz, reflecting the widespread commitment to this vision.

As the German-Czech border region continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: Together, we are stronger.
