Crossing a road without adhering to traffic rules in the United Arab Emirates could result in a fine of Dh10,000.
In an effort to enhance road safety, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently shared safety tips for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of e-scooters or any personal transport. The new traffic law, effective from March 29, 2024, outlines several important rules to follow when crossing roads.
One of the key points is that pedestrians, as well as individuals on cycles, e-scooters, or any form of personal transport, must not stop in the middle of the road or cross from an undesignated area. Jaywalking, defined as crossing a road from a non-designated area, is now subject to higher fines, potential jail sentences, and both criminal and civil liabilities for those who disregard proper traffic rules.
To ensure safety, pedestrians are advised to make eye contact with drivers and only cross once traffic has fully stopped. It is crucial to follow traffic signals and only cross when the pedestrian light is green. Looking and listening in all directions before crossing is also essential.
When walking at night, wearing reflective clothing is recommended to increase visibility. If there are no pavements, pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic to see approaching vehicles. Using footbridges where provided is a safe option. Pedestrians should refrain from using their phones and headphones while crossing roads to remain alert to their surroundings.
The government has increased fines in an attempt to reduce the growing number of jaywalking incidents. Under the current law, fines for jaywalking are Dh400, but under the new law, if a person crosses the road from an undesignated location and causes a traffic accident, they may face imprisonment and a fine ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh10,000.
In January 2024, nearly 44,000 people were caught jaywalking in Dubai, and unfortunately, eight individuals lost their lives in run-over incidents during the same month. The new traffic law aims to reduce these numbers by enforcing stricter penalties for disregarding road safety rules.
The UAE provides safe and accessible options for crossing roads, such as subways, footbridges, and smart pedestrian crossings. By following these safety tips and guidelines, pedestrians can help create a safer environment for everyone using the roads.
