Crowd attends inaugural Mass following Minneapolis shooting incident, with lingering queries unanswered
In the heart of Minneapolis, the Annunciation Catholic Church has become a focal point of grief and sorrow this week, after a shooting left 20 people injured and two children dead.
On Sunday, Father Dennis Zehren addressed his congregation, offering comfort and reflection in the wake of the tragedy. The attacker, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, a former student and member of the church, opened fire during the Mass, firing 116 rifle rounds before taking his own life at the scene.
The shooting claimed the lives of 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. Their families, Jesse and Danielle Merkel, and Harper's parents, have urged leaders to address the pressing issues of gun violence and the mental health crisis. They believe change is necessary to prevent their children's stories from becoming another tragedy.
Among the wounded was Endre Gunter, who survived surgery after being shot twice. His mother, Danielle, expressed her gratitude for her son's survival, while his aunt praised his strength and faith during recovery.
Eighteen others, including 15 students and three elderly parishioners, were also injured in the shooting. The community remains in shock, with many seeking solace in each other's company.
The Mass held after the attack was the first gathering for the congregation since the shooting. The church sanctuary is now a crime scene, with investigators still searching for a motive for the attack.
Community members have rallied around the victims, tying blue and green ribbons on street poles as a symbol of solidarity. Linda Nucci organized yard signs reading, "Our hearts are with Annunciation."
Sarah Henning led memorial efforts across the city, with 300 volunteers tying nearly 3,000 ribbons. The Merkels asked the community to remember Fletcher for his love for family, friends, fishing, cooking, and sports. They expressed hope for healing, as they mourn the loss of their beloved son.
As the community continues to heal, they stand united, offering support and love to those affected by this tragic event.
