Cultivating the Foundation for Millet Farming

The International Year of Millets (IYOM) 2023 marked a significant milestone in the global recognition and promotion of millet-based cuisine in India. This initiative, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed to bring the story of millets to the world stage.
Millets, climate-resilient, nutritious, and economically viable crops, have found a new place in India's agricultural landscape. Suitable for diverse agroclimatic zones and drought-resistant, millets align with sustainable agriculture goals.
India's millet production increased from about 14.52 million metric tons in 2016-17 to 17.96 million metric tons in 2020-21, and exports also rose significantly, reflecting growing domestic and international demand. The Government of India has promoted millet cultivation through schemes offering subsidies and support to farmers, along with nutrition-focused campaigns to boost consumption.
However, challenges remain. Consumption has declined in recent decades due to dietary shifts and lack of awareness. For millets to secure a sustainable place in India's food system, further interventions are needed:
- Enhanced government support: Continued subsidies, inclusion of millets in public distribution systems, and research funding to improve millet varieties and yields.
- Infrastructure and processing facilities: Development of value-added processing units and supply chains to increase millet product availability and convenience for consumers.

A dedicated national mission is essential to solve post-harvest constraints, improve product innovation, and position millets as everyday staples. Decentralized procurement empowers districts to source locally, while incentives can drive adoption of millets.
Boosting millet yields relies on choosing climate-appropriate varieties and improving crop management. Integrating millets into school meal programmes can normalize their consumption from childhood. Consumer demand for convenient millet products is growing, necessitating product innovation, branding, and retail infrastructure.
Millets offer a solution at the crossroads of rainfed agriculture and nutritional security. Despite the buzz generated by the International Year of Millets, tangible gains in millet production and value have remained modest. Sustained growth in millet production and value creation requires continued strategic interventions including government support, infrastructure development, and consumer awareness efforts.
