Customers' responses to burger chain ceasing card payments
In a surprising move, the Smashburger restaurant on Großneumarkt has announced that it will no longer accept card payments. Owner Safak König explained the decision in a series of TikTok and Instagram videos, citing the additional bureaucratic effort and costs associated with the Technical Security Device (TSE) as the main reason.
The TSE is a requirement for electronic cash register systems since January 1, 2023, as part of efforts to prevent tax evasion and make transactions more verifiable for tax authorities. However, with cash transactions, this verification is not possible.
König operates an open cash register and refutes the accusations of money laundering that have arisen due to the cash-only policy. He argues that the costs and complexities of implementing the TSE are too high for him.
The cash-only policy has sparked a heated debate, with some users criticizing König's decision. One user stated they will not visit the restaurant due to the cash-only policy, while another argued that cash means "freedom" and that without it, human freedom is lost.
On the other hand, the user "All cards should be cut" supports the cash-only policy, arguing that it promotes privacy and independence from the financial system.
The Smashburger on Großneumarkt is operated by Piratengourmet GmbH. It is worth noting that there is no receipt obligation with an open cash register, but a receipt or proof of purchase must be issued upon customer request.
The decision by Smashburger on Großneumarkt to go cash-only has certainly stirred up a debate, with both sides presenting valid arguments. Only time will tell how this will impact the restaurant's business and the larger conversation about cash transactions in the modern world.
