Customs authorities are scrutinizing multiple violations found within the food service industry
On August 31, 2025, the Main Customs Office Münster carried out inspections under the Anti-Bribery Act in the Borken district. The inspections covered a total of six establishments, including five catering establishments and one taxi company.
In the first catering establishment inspected, a 68-year-old employee was found to be working without a valid residence permit. The customs office initiated investigations against the employee and her employer following this discovery.
In a second catering establishment, a man without a residence permit was found, along with two employees not registered for social security and another employee not receiving the minimum wage. Further investigations were initiated against the employer in this establishment.
In a third catering establishment, employees were found to be working without being registered for social security. Additionally, two employees in this establishment were also found to be without their ID, contrary to regulations for the catering industry. However, no new employees without valid residence permits, social security registration, or minimum wage were found in these inspections.
No new establishments were covered in the inspections mentioned above. The customs officers also initiated an administrative offense procedure against an employee who refused to be questioned by the customs office.
Goswin Brehe, head of the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit at the Main Customs Office Münster, expressed shock at the number of violations found during the inspections. Brehe, who is headquartered in Gronau at the Hauptzollamt Münster, stated that the inspections are important to protect honest businesses from prohibited practices by their competitors.
Nine customs officers, three employees from the Foreigners' Office, and two officers from the Borken District Police Authority participated in the inspections. Further investigations are pending in the third catering establishment.
