Customs headquarters within the main customs administration of the customs region of the European Union community
The Main Customs Office in Braunschweig recently welcomed 28 eager young minds aged 10 to 16 for a day of hands-on learning during their Future Day event on April 3, 2025.
The event, organised by Dagmar Taeger, the press spokesperson for the Main Customs Office, aimed to provide the children with a glimpse into the diverse world of customs work. The day was filled with interactive activities, role-play scenarios, and practical demonstrations.
The day began with a simulated control operation, where the children were introduced to various aspects of customs work. They learned to use practice irritant spray devices, witnessed demonstrations of drug swab tests, and were introduced to laser devices for document control, and endoscopes for cavity inspection. The children also had the opportunity to try out customs office equipment, such as handcuffs, radios, and protective vests.
In addition to the practical aspects, the children were also educated on the importance of customs in protecting animals and enforcing species protection laws. A table displaying exhibits like corals, giant clams, snake skin, bear and leopard fur was set up to demonstrate this.
The children were also given a taste of unarmed self-defense using punching bags. They were taught to identify taxable items and understand concepts like gross, net, minimum wage, smuggling, and tax evasion.
The day was not just about work, but also about fostering a sense of community. Dagmar Taeger expressed her hope that some of the participants might become future colleagues. She was satisfied with the proceedings of the Future Day and praised the enthusiasm and curiosity of the participants.
