The Customs Office in Germany is offering a range of training and study opportunities for young individuals seeking a secure future in a large federal administration. On September 1, 2025, Senior Government Director Franz Horak welcomed 46 new trainees at the Main Customs Office Dresden, marking the start of these exciting ventures.

Among the opportunities are apprenticeships in the middle service, which last two years and qualify for the professional title of "financial administrator". A total of 37 trainees have embarked on this path. For those aiming higher, a dual study program in the higher service is available, lasting three years and resulting in the academic degree "Bachelor of Laws" (LL.B.). Nine individuals have started this program.

The practical phases of both the apprenticeship and the dual study program are spent in various departments of the training main customs office, nearby customs offices, customs investigation offices, and suitable departments of the General Customs Directorate. This hands-on experience provides a comprehensive understanding of the customs office's operations.

The theoretical parts of the dual study program for the higher service are completed at the Federal Administration School in Münster, while the theoretical parts for the middle service are at the training centers of the Federal Finance Administration's Education and Science Center.

For those interested in the higher service customs apprenticeship and study, middle service customs apprenticeship, and administrative informatics study at the customs office, detailed information can be found on the www.zoll-karriere.de website. Specific inquiries can be directed to Rebecca Weidner at the Main Customs Office Dresden (0351/4644-1048, email: [email protected], and www.zoll.de). For administrative informatics study at the General Customs Directorate, contact the Directorate I in Münster (0228/303-14364, email: [email protected], and www.zoll-karriere.de).

Across Germany, around 1,700 young people were sworn in as future customs officers on September 1, 2025. After completing the dual study program or apprenticeship, young customs officers can expect to be employed in a variety of areas within the customs office.

The customs office offers a secure job with many exciting and varied tasks, contributing to tax revenues, consumer protection, securing jobs, and digitizing administration in Germany. Applications for a start on September 1, 2026, are still possible until October 15, 2025, for the higher or middle customs service at the Main Customs Office Dresden, and for administrative informatics at the General Customs Directorate.
