Cycling enthusiasts assess Aurum Magma Road Bike: Discussion on the performance of bicycle co-designed by Contador and Basso
News Article: Aurum Magma Road Bike Review
In the world of high-performance cycling, Spanish bike brand Aurum has made a splash with its Magma road bike. Co-owned by two of the biggest names in professional bike racing, Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso, Aurum has been turning heads since its founding in 2020.
The Magma, Aurum's more race-focused tarmac option, is a sleek and lightweight machine. With a carbon frame weighing just 780g for an unpainted 54cm frame, it's clear that Aurum has prioritised efficiency and speed. The Magma's stiffness is immediately noticeable, promoting power transfer both out of the saddle and seated.
However, the ride quality of the Magma is on the direct side, which could potentially affect comfort on poor road surfaces. The tester found the 100mm stem on the 56cm bike a little short and the front end a smidge high for their ideal setup. Fortunately, the Magma's rear triangle has vibration-damping built in and the flattened top tube adds some shock-absorption, helping to smooth out the ride.
The Magma's handling is fast, but it may not be ideally suited for UK roads due to its stiffness and the need for wider tyres. The test bike featured DT Swiss' 45mm deep ERC 1400 wheels from the Endurance range, which can accommodate a 35mm set of road tyres. For those seeking even more weight savings, the Magma can potentially lose 300g by using alternative wheels and tubeless setup tyres.
The saddle of the test bike was a 3D-printed Fizik Antares model, found comfortable enough for rides up to 100km. The Magma's rear triangle also features vibration-damping, adding to the overall comfort of the ride.
Aurum's carbon technology, known as ECT (Experience Carbon Technology), is evident in the Magma. The Magma is made from ECT10, Aurum's highest grade, which contributes to its impressive weight and stiffness.
The Magma road bike retails for £8,000, a price that seems in line with other high-end brands, but value is not considered exceptional. The switch to SRAM RED or Shimano Dura-Ace would lose another 300g, but at considerable expense.
The Magma road bike was visible at the Giro d'Italia 2022, sponsored by Team Polti Kometa, another venture of Aurum. The brand also sponsors the ProTeam Politi Visit Malta.
Overall, the Aurum Magma road bike is a fast and efficient machine, ideal for those seeking a race-focused ride. While it may not be the most comfortable bike on poor road surfaces, its stiffness and handling make it a formidable choice for those who prioritise speed and performance.
