Cycling priority on Mühlenstraße abolished in Greifswald

In the city of Greifswald, a significant change is coming to Mühlenstraße, as the city administration has announced the abolition of the bike street regulation, effective from September 8, 2025. This decision, made due to a ruling by the Greifswald Administrative Court, has sparked controversy among residents, cyclists, and local businesses.

The street will once again be part of the 30 km/h zone in the city center, designed to protect residents, pedestrians, and cyclists. However, the revocation of the bike street regulation means that cyclists will no longer be able to ride side by side, and the road will be open to general traffic.

The court ruling was issued in response to a case where the plaintiff objected to the designation of resident parking spaces in Mühlenstraße, arguing that they were restricting traffic space and negating the primary purpose of a bike street. The Administrative Court agreed with these arguments and ruled that the resident parking spaces must be removed, resulting in a general no-stopping zone in the entire Mühlenstraße.

Mayor Dr. Stefan Fassbinder and Senator for Urban Development Achim Lerm deeply regret this development, as they believe the previous solution, while not perfect, allowed for a good coexistence of different types of traffic. Achim Lerm stated that the previous solution could have been maintained practically, providing mutual consideration for all parties involved.

The city administration, along with the police, fire department, and traffic authority, has inspected the site to determine how to implement the traffic regulations. Establishments like the post office, hotel, furniture store, and flower shop rely on delivery traffic, which would not be possible with an absolute no-stopping zone. Services from craftsmen, social services, and waste disposal would also be affected.

Dr. Stefan Fassbinder explained that the legal dispute has not contributed to improving conditions for cycling. He lamented the loss of a piece of bike-friendly infrastructure, as Greifswald is now losing a significant portion of its commitment to sustainable and cyclist-friendly urban development.

The only way to balance the different interests was to revoke the bike street regulation. Despite this, the decision to allow vehicles back on Mühlenstraße does not significantly restrict cyclists' use of the street, but it does mark a shift in the city's approach to promoting cycling and sustainable transportation.
