Cycling remains favorable and accommodated in Aschaffenburg

In a celebration of cycling promotion, Aschaffenburg, a city in Bavaria, was recertified as a "Bike-Friendly Municipality" by the AGFK (Working Group of Bike-Friendly Municipalities in Bavaria) in July 2025.

The ceremony, held during a specialist excursion, was attended by 35 Bavarian cycling experts from Upper Bavaria to Lower Franconia. Holger Schmidt, deputy managing director of AGFK, presented the certificate to the Mayor of Aschaffenburg.

The city administration has been actively supporting cycling promotion within their respective responsibilities, with annual continuous funding of around 1 million euros making many measures tangible. Notable projects include the expansion and renovation of the Main cycle path, the marking of the bike street in Auweg, and the new construction of the pedestrian and cycle path on the B 26 Darmstadt Street by the State Building Authority Aschaffenburg. These construction projects have improved the urban network of main cycle routes, connecting the city districts and neighboring municipalities.

Cooperation in the Bike Forum with representatives of society ensures transparency and participation on a broad basis. An annual progress report informs the city council in the Planning and Traffic Senate, keeping everyone updated on the progress of the cycling concept.

The "Bike-Friendly Municipality" status awarded to Aschaffenburg is valid until 2031. The purpose of the excursion was to learn about the framework conditions, implementations, and current projects in the context of cycling promotion in Aschaffenburg.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the cycling concept, an image film was created and can be viewed at this link and on the city's social media channels. The presentation of the certificate to the Mayor of Aschaffenburg was photographed, and the photos can be found on the city's official website.

The implementation of the 2015 cycling concept is steadily progressing, gradually closing gaps in the cycle route network. However, the overall process of creating a bike-friendly city is a continuous task and not yet completed. Safety and riding comfort have improved along the main cycle routes, making Aschaffenburg an even more inviting city for cyclists.

In addition, over 70 cities, municipalities, and districts within the AGFK have been awarded "Bike-Friendly Municipality" status, further promoting cycling as a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation in Bavaria.
