Cyclist Marlies Mejías, a loving mother, rigorous mentor, and dominating force on both the road and track, is once again steering her way towards the Olympic Games following her triumphs with the US team.
Marlies Mejiás, a professional cyclist hailing from a remote setting in Cuba, recently clinched a silver medal in the Scratch race at the 2025 Pan American Championships held in Paraguay.
Mejiás' cycling career has been marked by numerous successes. She has been one of the most explosive riders in any women's event, with an impressive record of wins and podium finishes. In 2021 alone, she secured 34 top 3 finishes, and in 2022, she returned to racing and earned podiums at the Armed Forces Cycling Classic and 14 other races.
Mejiás' journey to cycling stardom began in 2007 when she won the Cuban Junior National Championship. She left her native country in 2017 to join the professional cycling team, Weber Shimano Ladies Powers. Since then, she has called Virginia home, living there with her family who also reside in the state. Mejiás and her family have a home in Virginia, and she holds a green card with permanent residency in the US.
In the US, Mejiás has made a significant impact on the cycling scene. She won six of 11 races at Kwik Trip Tour of America's Dairyland and three of the team's four victories at the Tour of Newport News in Virginia. Her teammates also achieved great success, winning gold in the Team Pursuit and Individual Pursuit at the same events.
Despite her success in the US, Mejiás has not forgotten her roots. She hopes to compete for Cuba at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In fact, this year, she swept the road race and time trial titles in Cuba. She also took part in UCI track races at VELO Sports Center in Los Angeles to earn points and compete on the track that will be used for the 2028 Olympic Games.
However, Mejiás faced a setback in her Olympic aspirations when visa restrictions prevented her from qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. Undeterred, she is now looking forward to representing Cuba at the UCI Track World Championships in Santiago, Chile in October.
Mejiás' ultimate goal is to become a US citizen, a dream she hopes to achieve in a few more years. Despite the challenges she has faced, her determination and talent have made her a force to be reckoned with in the world of cycling.
