Cyclists receive roadway direction signs in Mühlheim
In the picturesque city of Mühlheim am Main, a commitment to road safety and promoting a cycling-friendly environment has led to its participation in the Hessian Ministry's campaign, "Safe on the road with distance."
Led by First Mayor Robert Ahrnt and Cycling Officer Gerald Klatt, who also serves as the Chairman of the ADFC, the city aims to set a positive example and increase safety for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.
The campaign's primary focus is to raise awareness about legal overtaking distances, which are crucial for ensuring the safety of everyone on the road. In urban areas, drivers must maintain a distance of at least 1.50 meters when overtaking cyclists, pedestrians, and e-scooter riders. Outside urban areas, this distance increases to 2.00 meters.
Gerald Klatt emphasised the importance of these regulations, stating that many cyclists ride on sidewalks where it is not allowed, endangering pedestrians. He further highlighted that only those who feel safe will cycle happily with the iron horse.
Mayor Dr. Alexander Krey stressed that more safety in road traffic contributes to citizens feeling comfortable cycling in Mühlheim. He believes that increased safety will encourage more people to cycle, making Mühlheim a greener and more sustainable city.
To raise awareness, vehicles of the municipal fleet and the First Mayor's car have been equipped with neon yellow distance stickers, funded by the ADFC Mühlheim. These stickers serve as a constant reminder for drivers to maintain the required overtaking distances.
The campaign's ultimate goal, as emphasised by First Mayor Robert Ahrnt, is to reduce accidents involving cyclists and sensitize road users to mutual respect. Reality often shows that these distances are not maintained, leading to dangerous situations.
The city of Mühlheim am Main and ADFC Mühlheim are united in their mission to make Mühlheim's roads safer for everyone. By participating in the Hessian Ministry's campaign, they hope to create a safer, more cycling-friendly environment for the benefit of all citizens.
