In a significant turn of events, former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a visit to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade. The meeting, held recently, reportedly focused on advancing the development of the Yoruba race and fostering unity among traditional institutions in the southwest. However, the African Democratic Congress Coalition, allegedly linked to the gathering, has denied any knowledge of such a meeting.

Meanwhile, in political news, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State following a political crisis. The crisis led to the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for six months. A Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, was appointed by Tinubu to oversee the state during this period.

Minister Nyesom Wike has expressed hope that the state of emergency in Rivers State will expire on September 18. He also believes that the Rivers State Assembly will resume its duties after the expiration of the state of emergency. Wike's optimism comes amidst preliminary findings suggesting that political gangsters and thugs attached to El-Rufai were involved in the shooting that disrupted public peace and order in the state. Consequently, the Kaduna State Police Command has launched an investigation into a political meeting linked to former Governor Nasir El-Rufai that reportedly turned violent.

In other news, the police have warned that no one is above the law and they will not spare anyone found culpable. This warning comes in response to allegations of political corruption and violence. Hotels, event centres, and similar facilities have been warned that they will be liable if they host political gatherings without first notifying security agencies.

On a positive note, the Obidient Movement, led by National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko, has asserted that they are not loyal to any political party. Tanko also stated that the movement would stand with former vice president Atiku Abubakar if he contests in the 2027 presidential election, but their loyalty lies with Peter Obi.

In international news, Portugal has confirmed that Ruben Neves will wear the number 21 shirt once worn by his late close friend and former team-mate, Diogo Jota. The number 21 shirt will remain on the field as a tribute to Jota, who tragically lost his life in July at the age of 28 following a car crash in northern Spain.

Lastly, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, a Nigerian television host, has opened up about her struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts. Senator Jonah Jang, former Plateau State Governor, said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been one of the most united political parties in Nigeria since its formation in 1998.

These developments underscore the dynamic nature of politics and society in Nigeria and Portugal, with various issues ranging from unity and development to corruption and tragedy being addressed.
