Daimler's hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks have successfully traveled over 225,000 kilometers.
Daimler Truck has made significant strides in the development of its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell trucks, with the successful completion of initial customer trials. The trials, which began in July 2024, saw five Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks deployed across various applications in Germany and beyond.
A total of 285 refuellings were carried out using around 15 tonnes of liquid hydrogen at facilities in Wörth am Rhein and Duisburg. This intensive use of the liquid hydrogen fueling stations during the trials enabled further optimization of the refueling process.
The GenH2 trucks demonstrated impressive performance, with customers reporting that they could be deployed in a manner comparable to diesel vehicles. The trucks offered long range, with refuelling times of around 10-15 minutes, and were suitable for long-distance operations.
Air Products, Amazon, Holcim, INEOS Inovyn, and Wiedmann & Winz were among the companies that participated in the trials. Air Products used the GenH2 truck for bottled gas deliveries, while INEOS Inovyn's partner VERVAEKE used it for PVC and vinyl distribution. Wiedmann & Winz, in collaboration with DP World, deployed the GenH2 truck in combined transport involving container haulage. Amazon tested the GenH2 truck on a fixed logistics route between Frankenthal and Sindelflingen, and Holcim operated the GenH2 truck in cement transport across Germany and into the Netherlands.
Feedback from customers highlighted comfort, low noise levels, and reliability during daily use of the GenH2 trucks. The importance of close technical support and training during the trial phase was also emphasized.
The GenH2 trucks were able to cover distances of more than 1,000 kilometres on a single refuelling. Over the trial period, average hydrogen consumption ranged between 5.6 kg and 8 kg per 100 kilometres, depending on load and route, with an average gross vehicle weight of 16-34 tonnes.
Daimler Truck has completed more than 225,000 kilometres of real-world operations with the five Mercedes-Benz GenH2 fuel cell trucks. The company plans to begin a second trial phase in late 2025 with five additional customers, including DB Schenker, Pfenning Logistics, and HAVI.
The development of the next generation of GenH2 trucks is underway, with small-series production of 100 units scheduled to begin in 2026 at the Wörth plant. Servicing during the trials was supported by Daimler Truck through specialised service branches in Haan and Stuttgart-Feuerbach. The trucks were tested in daily logistics operations across various applications, including transporting building materials, handling containers, and chemicals.
The initial customer trials provided valuable insights for the further development of Daimler Truck's fuel cell trucks. Daimler Truck is committed to continuing its efforts to create sustainable transportation solutions and looks forward to the next phase of the GenH2 truck trials.
