In recent news, two popular bathing spots in Berlin have been issued warnings due to different water quality concerns.

The northern bathing spot of Groß Glienicker See, located in the southwestern part of the city, is under a bathing warning. This warning was issued by the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) due to elevated levels of E.Coli bacteria, which pose a health-endangering risk when swallowed. The most recent water quality report indicating these elevated levels was issued around early August 2025, with warnings published on August 4, 2025, and follow-up sampling planned shortly thereafter.

Bathing at the northern bathing spot of Groß Glienicker See poses an increased health risk, unlike the warning for the Schmöckwitz bathing spot at Zeuthener See. The latter has been issued due to an increased algal bloom, which could lead to reduced visibility. However, the warning does not mention any increased health risk.

It's worth noting that the Schmöckwitz bathing spot is not located in the southwestern part of Berlin, unlike the Groß Glienicker See. Furthermore, the Schmöckwitz bathing spot is not marked by the border between Berlin and Brandenburg, unlike the Groß Glienicker See, which marks the border.

The Federal Environment Agency states that fecal contamination of water can occur due to wastewater, rainwater runoff, or wash-offs from agricultural areas. Bathing visitors themselves or birds could also contribute locally to fecal contamination.

In a positive note, for all other bathing spots in Berlin, the bathing traffic light shows 'Green': The quality is good and suitable for bathing.

New samples will be taken and analyzed promptly to determine the extent of the issues at both bathing spots and to ensure the safety of visitors. It's advised to check the latest updates before planning a visit to any of the affected areas.
