Danish EU Presidency Takes On Priorities of Enhanced Security and Market Competitiveness
The Danish government has officially taken over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, assuming the role from 1 July 2022 to 31 December 2025. Under the leadership of Marie Bjerre, the appointed Minister for European Affairs, Denmark aims to steer the EU towards a stronger, more competitive, and greener future.
The Danish EU Presidency has outlined three main priorities: stronger management of migration to the EU, continued support for Ukraine, and a competitive and green Europe. The Danish government believes that the EU's strength lies in European unity, a solid economic foundation, stable democracies, and socially balanced societies.
In light of the shifting geopolitical landscape, the Danish presidency emphasises the need for the EU to take responsibility for its own security and strengthen its competitiveness. Marie Bjerre, in her visits to all 27 EU countries and eight candidate countries, has reiterated the need for Europe to become stronger economically, politically, and militarily.
To achieve these goals, the Danish presidency aims to develop the EU's strength further to promote and defend both European interests and the international legal order. This includes efforts to support Ukraine and tackle irregular migration, in addition to enhancing the EU's defence and security and improving business conditions.
The Danish presidency also advocates for a strong and resolute EU that acts independently. To match words with action, the Danish presidency calls for delivering on the challenges it faces, such as strengthening the EU's defence and security capabilities during this period.
The Danish presidency programme also places a significant emphasis on the green transition, considering it essential for building a more secure and competitive Europe. The presidency aims to improve the conditions for European businesses by reducing regulatory burdens while maintaining the commitment to the green transition.
