In the heart of the city, the pedestrian zone is a bustling hub, frequented by families with children and the elderly. However, its peaceful atmosphere has been disrupted by the increasing number of cyclists and e-scooter users disregarding the rules, as the Municipal Ordinance Enforcement (MOE) discovered during their targeted spot checks last week.

The checks, carried out in response to public complaints and reports of dangerous situations and near-misses, were aimed at enforcing the regulations that make the pedestrian zone a protected area, primarily intended for the safety of pedestrians.

The MOE, led by Director Michael Althammer, identified 169 violations during the checks. Each violation was penalized with a fine of 25 euros. The focus of the checks was on the unauthorized use of the zone by cyclists and users of e-scooters.

Director Althammer emphasized the importance of compliance with regulations in the pedestrian zone, stating that even low-speed collisions could result in serious injuries. He further added that those who disregard the rules endanger others, and the actions of those using bikes or e-scooters in the pedestrian zone without permission can lead to accidents.

Recognizing the need for continuous monitoring, the MOE will continue checks in the coming weeks to ensure long-term safety in the downtown area. To supplement their efforts, controls in the pedestrian zone will be conducted by a private security company as a complement to the municipal regulatory office's external service. This measure, following a positive trial period, will ensure long-term compliance with regulations, with the private security service primarily deployed outside the regulatory office's service hours.

The goal of the checks is not only to penalize violations but also to prevent them through presence and education. By maintaining a visible and active enforcement presence, the MOE aims to deter potential violators and educate the public on the importance of following the rules in the pedestrian zone.

As the city continues to grow and evolve, it is crucial that we prioritize the safety of all its inhabitants. The pedestrian zone, with its unique charm and importance to the community, is no exception. Through continued efforts and cooperation, we can ensure that it remains a safe and enjoyable space for all.
