In the northeastern region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, over 165,000 children and young people commenced the new academic year, with around 14,300 of them starting their educational journey as first-graders. However, concerns regarding road safety have arisen, as data from the past year indicates a significant number of traffic accidents involving children.

Last year, 415 children aged between six and 14 were involved in traffic accidents on the state's roads. The majority of these incidents (60) occurred on the way to or from school, with 18 cases involving children as pedestrians.

Excessive speed has been identified as the primary cause of these accidents, with more than half (34) of the incidents involving children on bicycles. In an effort to address this issue, the police in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have integrated school route safety as part of their traffic safety work for the new school year.

To tackle excessive speed, the police will be conducting intensified stationary and mobile checks throughout the state throughout September. These measures are aimed at ensuring a safer environment for children travelling to and from school.

Unfortunately, the start of the new school year has not been without incident. Eight children were seriously injured, and 56 were lightly injured in these accidents. It is hoped that the increased traffic safety measures will help to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The police are urging drivers to be extra vigilant during this period, especially around schools and in areas where children are likely to be present. By working together, we can help to ensure that the roads of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern remain safe for all its young residents.
