DB's KIRA Project Extends to Darmstadt in Germany
In the heart of Germany, the KIRA project is making waves in the transportation industry. This groundbreaking collaboration between Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) is the first to test Level 4 autonomous driving with passengers.
The project, which is currently being conducted in Darmstadt, has expanded to include the northern and western districts of the city. New stops have been added, including the main train station, Pallaswiesenstraße in the Johannesviertel district, and the Nordbad/Bürgerpark.
DB Regio Bus Mitte operates the autonomous vehicles in the KIRA project. Trips between Langen, Egelsbach, and Darmstadt are now possible with the KIRA project, providing a new and innovative mode of transport for the region.
Passengers have rated their journeys with an average of 4.5 points out of 5, indicating positive evaluations of the test drives. These evaluations suggest that the project is on the right track in its mission to provide a flexible and intelligent public transport system.
The KIRA project is gaining valuable experience in the operation of autonomous vehicles, and it has provided insights into making public transport more flexible and intelligent. Funding for the project has been provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) with a total of approximately 2.2 million EUR.
HEAG mobilo GmbH and the Offenbach District Transport Company are also involved in the KIRA project. The responsible person who provided the extension offer of the KIRA project in the northern and western districts of Darmstadt is Mike Raiser, the project manager for KIRA at HEAG mobilo.
Over 1,000 registered users have been approved for the KIRA project's pilot. Interested individuals can register for the KIRA project through its dedicated app. The test operation of the KIRA project is currently scheduled to run until the end of 2025, with an extension now in the works.
DB subsidiary ioki provides the booking and route planning software for the KIRA project. The project now offers six self-driving vehicles in a major city for the first time, marking a significant step forward in the development and implementation of autonomous transportation.
The KIRA project is not just a test of technology, but a step towards a more connected, efficient, and sustainable future for public transport. As the project continues to evolve, it promises to bring about a transformation in the way we travel, making our journeys smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.
