Deactivated Powder-activated Coal Facility Journeys Towards Kiev
In a remarkable show of solidarity, Solingen Utilities in Germany is sending a temporary powdered activated carbon facility to the Kyiv Waterworks in Ukraine. This facility, which was previously used in Solingen, is intended to help maintain a minimum level of drinking water quality in Kyiv and surrounding areas, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children.
The decision to send the facility comes after Michael Esser, responsible for drinking water at Solingen Utilities, expressed his willingness to help Kyiv and surrounding areas. The facility, which was only used as a temporary solution until 2016 at the Glueder waterworks in Solingen, can filter out a wide range of pollutants and toxins during drinking water treatment.
The Glueder waterworks, commissioned in 2016, installed a filter stage necessitated by the first appearance of the Burgundy blood alga in the Sengbach reservoir in 2013. This pollutant, a harmful algal bloom, affected the quality of the reservoir's water. The powdered activated carbon facility was used for pre-filtration at the Glueder waterworks before the regular pre-filter facility was commissioned.
Despite the facility no longer being needed at the Glueder waterworks, it can still be used meaningfully for its remaining lifespan, according to Michael Esser. The facility, approximately the size of an average car and weighing over 400kg, is currently being prepared for travel. The exact travel plans are not being disclosed due to security reasons.
Solingen Utilities is working with Hamburg Water to provide the technical equipment for the transport of the facility. The organization that will support the powder filter system for drinking water treatment in Kyiv provided by Solingen Utilities is the German aid organization Welthungerhilfe.
Meanwhile, the Glueder waterworks continues to provide high-quality drinking water for Solingen residents. It contains several filter kettles that handle pre-filtration, ensuring the continued delivery of clean water to the city. The powdered activated carbon facility from Solingen Utilities is not currently in use at the Glueder waterworks.
This act of kindness from Solingen Utilities is a testament to the power of collaboration and mutual aid in ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water for all.
