Decade-long subsidies for regional bus services
In the heart of Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg is making strides in promoting sustainable and climate-friendly mobility. Launched by the Ministry of Transport in 2015, the Regiobuslines funding program has been instrumental in this transformation.
The Regiobuslines connect cities and communities without rail connections, running every hour from early morning to late at night, seven days a week. These modern and comfortable buses, known as bwregiobuses, are a common sight on the roads, standing out for their quality standards that include boarding and alighting aids, WLAN, and USB power outlets.
The bwegt initiative, an initiative by the state of Baden-Württemberg, oversees the bwregiobus family. The distinctive white-yellow-grey design of these buses has become a symbol of the state's commitment to sustainable transport. Cities and districts have the option to design their vehicles in this recognisable bwregiobus design when applying for funding.
Transport Minister Winfried Hermann recently announced plans to expand the network to over 90 lines, encouraging the districts to join in. Today, there are 51 bwregiobus lines operating across the state.
The Ministry of Transport provides annual funding of around 30 million euros for new lines or extensions of existing funding. This investment has yielded positive results, with passenger numbers increasing on almost all lines. Last year, around 12 million passengers used the bwregiobuses.
The Regiobuslines are now part of the bwegt brand family and are called bwregiobuses. A press release from December 28, 2024, announced new Regiobus lines for Baden-Württemberg.
For those interested in learning more about the Regiobus Lines, downloadable fact sheets are available on the Ministry of Transport's website, detailing the use, funding, and milestones of the program. The Ministry also has an email for the Press Office and a contact form for citizens.
The bwregiobuses provide a high-quality alternative to motorised individual traffic in the rural area, and the bwegt initiative works with regional railway companies and other partners to improve local and regional public transport. As the network continues to grow, the bwregiobuses are set to play a crucial role in promoting sustainable mobility in Baden-Württemberg.
