Decline in Global Downloads of Amazon's App As Per Report
Retailers are adapting to meet the changing needs of shoppers by integrating technology into their stores. This transformation includes creating age-appropriate experiences, implementing complementary shop-in-shops, and offering mobile shopping apps.
According to a report from Sensor Tower, mobile apps became an increasingly important channel for retailers, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic. Consumers spent over $100 billion in 2020 via mobile apps and games, and this trend continued into 2021.
In the United States, Amazon remained the top downloaded shopping app last year, followed by Shein, Walmart, and OfferUp. Nike, eBay, and Fetch Rewards also made it into the top 10. Interestingly, Shein became America's biggest fast fashion retailer in July, and was the second most downloaded shopping app globally.
Globally, Shopee was the most downloaded app in 2021. Amazon, despite dropping to the fourth most downloaded shopping app globally, retained its position as the retailer with the highest number of downloads among the internationally most well-known shopping apps. AliExpress came in sixth, and Wish came in seventh.
The Digital Turbine report found that 55% of mobile shoppers downloaded a new mobile shopping app ahead of the 2021 holiday shopping season. One of the newcomers that emerged last year was Klarna, which emerged as a buy now, pay later app and a shopping destination.
TikTok, while not a shopping app, generated $4.7 million in international revenue on Christmas in 2020, according to Sensor Tower. This suggests that social media platforms are also playing a significant role in influencing shopping behaviour.
Retailers are also reworking their physical stores to provide more personalised experiences. This includes creating shop-in-shops that cater to specific age groups or interests, and integrating technology to make shopping more seamless and convenient.
In conclusion, the retail landscape is evolving rapidly, with mobile apps and in-store technology playing increasingly important roles. Shoppers can expect more personalised and convenient shopping experiences in the future.
