Decline in Post-Shipment to the US by 80%
The recent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump have significantly impacted international mail and package traffic, particularly to the USA. According to UN data, the new tariffs have resulted in a decrease of over 80 percent in such traffic.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) has announced that 88 postal services worldwide have either fully or partially suspended their services to the USA since the exemption for small packages ended in late August. This includes Deutsche Post and DHL, which have restricted goods shipping from Germany to the USA due to uncertainties about the new tariffs.
The new tariffs have led to restrictions in many countries, including Germany. However, it's important to note that private packages and parcels declared as gifts with a value of up to $100 (approximately €86) are not affected by these tariffs, according to DHL.
The tariffs have not been specifically mentioned as affecting the delivery of packages within the USA or between other countries. But, private shipments from Germany to the USA are being restricted. For example, shipments from the EU will now be subject to a 15 percent customs duty due to the abolition of the de minimis rule.
Many packages will now be subject to the same customs duty as other imports from their country of origin due to the abolition of the existing customs exemptions for packages from around the world valued at less than $800 (approximately €700) as of August 29. This has led to increased customs duties and administrative burdens, causing some European postal operators to pause parcel shipments to the USA.
On August 29, the day the new rules took effect, the number of shipments to the USA decreased by 81 percent compared to the previous week, the UPU explained. The UPU did not provide specific information about the impact of the tariffs on individual postal services or countries.
A "new technical solution" is now being sought to resume postal services to the United States. It remains to be seen how this will affect the ongoing restrictions on private shipments from Germany to the USA.
