On August 8, 2025, users of Google Search Console across various hosting platforms, including Vercel, WP Engine, and Fastly, reported precipitous drops in crawling activity. This marked the beginning of a persistent issue that affected many websites worldwide.

The problem, which lasted for over two weeks, saw the global Googlebot crawl rate drop by approximately 30%, according to internal monitoring systems at Vercel, as documented by the Chief Technology Officer Malte Ubl. The decline was also noted by Pedro Dias, who observed similar behavioral changes in Bing's crawling patterns during the same period, suggesting potential infrastructure-level complications affecting multiple search engines simultaneously.

Site owners monitoring their Google Search Console Crawl Stats reports noticed the drop to near-zero crawling activity. PPC Land, a prominent site affected by the issue, saw its Search Console data show a sharp decline in crawl rates from 8K-9K daily requests starting August 16, 2025. Additional user reports confirmed ongoing crawling irregularities.

Despite the severity of the crawl rate declines, affected websites reported minimal impact on search rankings and organic traffic volumes. The incident, however, highlighted dependencies between major hosting platforms and search engine crawling infrastructure. Affected platforms included multiple hosting providers and content delivery networks, such as WP Engine, Fastly, and potentially Vercel.

Google acknowledged the issue on August 28, attributing it to problems within their systems. This confirmation came after days of speculation about the root causes of the problem. John Mueller, a Google representative, confirmed the problem was resolved on the same day.

The incident served as a reminder of the crucial role search engines play in the online ecosystem and the potential impact of infrastructure issues on website performance. As search engines continue to evolve, so too will the challenges they face, and the need for transparency and communication in addressing these issues becomes increasingly important.

In related news, Google launched the integrated Search Console Insights report on June 30, 2025, and continued expanding access to the Search Console Insights on July 14, 2025. Google also launched a comparison mode for 24-hour Search Console data on July 16, 2025, providing users with more tools to monitor and understand their website's performance.
