Deepening Collaboration in Research Between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein
Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein Strengthen Cooperation in Science and Research
Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein have announced a deepened collaboration on future topics, with a focus on strengthening their joint efforts in teaching and research. This agreement, outlined in a declaration of intent between the Hamburg authority for science, research, equal opportunities, and districts (BWFGB) and the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry for General and Vocational Education, Science, Research, and Culture (MBWFK), builds upon a long-standing cooperation between the two states.
Initially, the collaboration will extend to the teaching of music and the teaching of Alevi and Islamic religion. This development is seen as a key step in fostering cultural exchange and diversity within the academic community.
The universities in both states aim to bundle their competencies and further develop joint strengths in the field of research and science. They will work together to ensure that the range of studies in Northern Germany remains diverse and internationally attractive in the long term.
Notable examples of previous joint projects include the European XFEL, the Center for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), the Center for X-ray and Nanoforschung (CXNS) at DESY, "New 4.0 North German Energy Transition", "North German Living Lab", and the German Alliance for Marine Research.
Recently, a new Innovative Center for X-ray and Nanoforschung CXNS has been opened, and the North German Living Lab for energy transition has been initiated. The "Calls for Transfer" program continues to support science projects in Hamburg.
While specific future research projects under the new cooperation agreement have not yet been detailed, both states' science ministers, Katharina Fegebank and Karin Prien, stress the importance of working together in science and research. They highlight that research and science play a key role in mastering challenges like digitalization, energy transition, and demographic change.
The collaboration between the universities in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein is a significant step towards strengthening academic ties and ensuring Northern Germany remains a hub for diverse and internationally competitive studies. This partnership underscores the shared commitment of both states to foster innovation, cultural exchange, and educational excellence.
