Defender of Newcastle United to miss eight games due to Lewis Hall's exclusion from the primary team roster
Newcastle United in UEFA Champions League: Squad and Injury Updates
Newcastle United are participating in the revamped UEFA Champions League this season, and their squad for the competition has been announced. However, the team will be without the services of defender Jamaal Lascelles for eight league phase games.
Lascelles, who has yet to feature this season after rupturing his ACL over a year ago, will miss out despite his recent return from a lengthy injury. The Magpies will face FC Barcelona (at home), Paris Saint-Germain (away), Bayer Leverkusen (away), Benfica (at home), Marseille (away), PSV Eindhoven (at home), Athletic Club (at home), and Union Saint-Gilloise (away) in this season's league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
According to UEFA regulations, each club is entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season. This list includes youngsters Lewis Hall and Lewis Miley, who meet the required criteria to be registered in this list. The situation regarding the ability to change the Champions League squad mirrors that of Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League last term, with players being dropped and reintroduced based on the competition's squad rules.
Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has made the decision to exclude one of the club's experienced players from the UEFA Champions League squad due to the competition's 25-man squad rule. Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman are included in the squad, along with Fabian Schaër and Emil Krafth.
The term 'association-trained' or 'homegrown' refers to players who were trained in England but not necessarily with Newcastle United over the same period. Youngsters Lewis Hall and Lewis Miley are included in Newcastle United's 'B List' squad because they are considered youth or reserve players who have been promoted to the senior team but are not yet fully integrated into the main squad.
The rules for 'List A' specify that club-trained players are those who have spent three years, continuous or not, in the academy setup at Newcastle United between the ages of 15 and 21. The registration of players on List B provides a flexible way for clubs to register young, homegrown players without using up a valuable spot on their main 25-man 'List A' squad.
Newcastle United can change their Champions League squad this season, with a maximum of three new eligible players able to be registered for the remaining matches in the current competition, by 5 February 2026. This rule will allow the team to adapt their squad as necessary during the tournament.
Despite the challenges posed by Lascelles' injury and the strict squad rules, Newcastle United are determined to make the most of their participation in the UEFA Champions League this season.
