Defense of the Colts, led by Daniel Jones, suffocates the Dolphins
The Indianapolis Colts kicked off their 2023 season with a resounding victory, defeating the Miami Dolphins 33-8. The game, marked by the Colts' offensive dominance and the Dolphins' turnover woes, saw the Colts score on all seven of their possessions, while the Dolphins turned the ball over on three of their first four.
The Colts' running back, Jonathan Taylor, contributed significantly to their total of 418 yards, running for 71 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Daniel Jones, making his Indianapolis debut, completed 22 out of 29 passes for 272 yards, throwing one touchdown pass and running for two more. Rookie tight end Tyler Warren also had a noteworthy debut, catching seven passes for 76 yards.
On the other side of the field, the Dolphins' quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, was responsible for all three of their turnovers. He threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, culminating in 14 out of 23 passes for 114 yards and a 51.7 passer rating. Miami's offence managed a total of 211 yards, running 46 plays compared to the Colts' 70.
The game started on a high note for the Colts, with Camryn Bynum intercepting Tagovailoa on Miami's first drive. Laiatu Latu followed suit in the second quarter, intercepting Tagovailoa targeting Malik Washington on Miami's fourth possession. Kenny Moore II also had a strip sack that led to a turnover, which was recovered by Xavien Howard.
The Dolphins' only points came in the third quarter, when Tagovailoa scored a 11-yard touchdown pass to De'Von Achane and a subsequent 2-point conversion pass to Julian Hill, after the Colts had built a 30-0 lead. Zach Wilson replaced Tagovailoa on Miami's final drive, completing 5 out of 8 passes for 32 yards.
With this victory, the Colts have won their season opener for the first time since 2013. The Dolphins, under head coach Mike McDaniel, lost their season opener for the first time since 2020, marking a tough start to their 2023 campaign. The Colts will look to build on this momentum in their next game, while the Dolphins will aim to bounce back and improve their performance.
