Delay Criticisms Aired by Bromley's Team Manager After Shrewsbury Game
In the heated quarter-final match of the EFL Trophy between Bromley and Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, a delay in replacing an injured assistant referee caused a stir and disrupted the flow of the game.
The incident occurred 26 minutes into the first half, when Scott Chalkley, the assistant referee, sustained an injury and was unable to continue officiating. Niall Felton, the fourth official, temporarily took over Chalkley's role during the delay.
Andy Woodman, Bromley's manager, found the delay "embarrassing" and expressed his disapproval of the situation, stating it was tough on both teams and should not have happened. The delay disrupted Bromley's momentum in the first half of the game, as they sought to secure a goalless draw at Croud Meadow.
The delay also extended the duration of the game for both teams, lasting for 17 minutes in the first half. Alan Cork, a level-five qualified referee, volunteered to assist in the game, but his credentials only allow him to officiate matches at the 10th tier and below. He could perform supplementary officiating duties at a higher level, but a qualified referee had to be sourced from the audience to assume Felton's duties on the sidelines.
Woodman hoped that the injured assistant referee, Scott Chalkley, was okay and that he seemed to be alright. He also expressed concern about the delay, stating it was an embarrassing situation for the referees' management.
The game was played under hot conditions, making it a challenging experience for both teams. Despite the disruption, the second half of the game became a "damp squib" due to the extended duration of the match. Woodman mentioned that the second half of the game became less intense compared to the first, with both teams seeming to tire from the extended match duration.
Woodman expressed his belief that Shrewsbury manager Michael Appleton might view the situation differently. However, he remains adamant that the delay was unacceptable and should not have happened. The delay in replacing the injured assistant referee remains a topic of discussion among football enthusiasts and officials alike.
