Delay in Implementing Report on Upper House Election Loss by LDP

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan has delayed the adoption of a review report on their defeat in the House of Councillors election held on July 20. The report, which is expected to be submitted to a general meeting of LDP lawmakers on Tuesday, is anticipated to address several key factors that contributed to the party's loss.

One of the main issues expected to be discussed is a gaffe by Upper House lawmaker Yosuke Tsuruho, who stated that it was "lucky" that an earthquake occurred in the Noto Peninsula last year. The revised report is also expected to mention the issue of politics and money, centered around a political funds scandal in LDP factions, as a key factor behind the party's defeat in the July 20 election.

Internal objections within the LDP have prevented the adoption of the report due to its failure to address the responsibility of the current party leadership, including Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Hiroshi Moriyama, who served as the Secretary-General of the LDP, has stated that he would "clarify responsibility" following the adoption of the report at a general meeting of LDP lawmakers. However, the future role or fate of Moriyama within the party remains unspecified in available public information.

The LDP's Election Strategy Committee Chairman, Seiji Kihara, mentioned that some causes of the party's defeat were inadequately addressed in the initial report. The LDP's election review committee plans to discuss revisions to the report on Tuesday. Once the revised report is submitted, it will likely address the responsibility of the current party leadership and be discussed and potentially adopted by a general meeting of LDP lawmakers on the same day.

The focus will shift to the fate of party Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama after the finalization of the report. The revised report, upon submission, is expected to be discussed and potentially adopted by a general meeting of LDP lawmakers on Tuesday.
