Delay in parcel deliveries occurring in Dusseldorf, caused by a work stoppage at DHL.
Deutsche Post is currently in negotiations with the United Services Trade Union (ver.di) regarding the working conditions and benefits of its employees. The latest round of discussions, held on February 14, 2025, did not result in an agreement.
The main point of contention is the proposed adjustment to the vacation regulation. According to the current plan, only some employees will receive an additional vacation day. However, ver.di is demanding three additional vacation days for wage-earning employees and trainees.
This demand is part of a larger push for a linear wage increase of seven percent for approximately 170,000 employees, trainees, and dual students at Deutsche Post AG. The proposed contract term for the new wage agreement is twelve months, with wage increases of 1.8 percent from July 1, 2025, and an additional 2.0 percent from October 1, 2026.
However, ver.di argues that these wage increases do not offset the noticeable real wage losses for employees as prices in supermarkets continue to rise. In addition, the employers had initially submitted an offer with a contract term of 27 months until March 31, 2027, but no specific offers to address wage differentials have been publicly presented for the period between 2025 and 2027.
In response to the employers' offer, Thomas Großtüsken, head of the postal services, freight forwarding, and logistics department in North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized that the offer is completely insufficient. As a result, ver.di expects an improved offer in the fourth round of negotiations next week that is conducive to an agreement.
The situation has led to a call for a strike by employees in North Rhine-Westphalia, with all parcel centers being asked to go on strike on February 25, 2025. According to ver.di, widespread delays in the delivery of parcels may occur from February 26, 2025, onwards, if an agreement is not reached.
The next round of wage negotiations is scheduled for March 3/4, 2025. Both parties will be hoping to find a resolution that satisfies the needs of both employees and the company.
