Delving into the Colchester Castle Museum Experience

In the historic town of Colchester, a group of excited students embarked on an educational journey at the local Castle Museum. The end-of-year school trip for Robin's class was filled with learning opportunities, interactive exhibits, and plenty of fun.

The day began outside the museum, where a park with a massive swing, zip line, sand area, and other playground equipment provided the perfect start to the adventure. As the day progressed, the group moved inside the castle walls, constructed in 1076 under the supervision of the Bishop of Rochester.

Upon entering the museum, everyone gathered around the prison cells in the dungeons to listen to a captivating story. The museum offered a mix of interactions, including dressing up in Roman attire, building bridges, and designing stained glass windows.

Robin found herself particularly drawn to the Roman-era exhibits, enjoying listening to stories about people who might have lived during the time period when the castle was built. She even tried her hand at designing a stained glass window, adding a personal touch to her learning experience.

On the top floor of the museum, Robin and her friends discovered numerous artifacts with small descriptions. They also stumbled upon a special section commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Among the exhibits, a chariot video game and statues of Gods, including Jupiter, caught their attention.

The top floor, although smaller than the bottom, still offered plenty to learn and see. Robin and her friends played family while dressing up on the top floor, creating a memorable experience they would cherish.

The day was not just about fun and games, however. Robin and her class had also visited the Auschwitz concentration camp memorial as part of a commemorative trip in January 2025, organised by the Stiftung Arbeit und Leben Sachsen-Anhalt and the International Educational and Encounter Center. This moving experience underscored the museum's ability to provide a comprehensive and thought-provoking educational experience.

As the day came to a close, the children gathered around the well inside the castle before exiting the main area. Dann, a helpful museum guide, had assisted several kids complete a bridge-building challenge, ensuring that the day was not only informative but also engaging.

All in all, Colchester Castle Museum proved to be a fantastic destination for a day out, offering a unique blend of history, interaction, and learning opportunities that left Robin and her class with a deeper understanding of the past and a sense of wonder for the stories that the castle walls could tell.
