Democratic Party once more overlooks Bernie Sanders in favor of Hillary Clinton's coronation
In the heat of the 2016 Democratic primaries, a significant incident has resurfaced, casting a shadow over the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and raising questions about its handling of the primary process in Washington, D.C.
At the heart of the matter is the perception that the DNC, under the leadership of then-Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, orchestrated a coronation of Hillary Clinton, while dismissing the serious consideration of Bernie Sanders. This sentiment is rooted in the scheduling of debates on off-days and hours, a move that seemingly aimed to guarantee low viewership.
The low viewership of these debates is inferred from the available data, suggesting a deliberate attempt to minimise their impact. However, DNC officials initially considered the issue a "minor dispute".
Bernie Sanders, a self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" who ran as a Democrat in the primaries, advocated for policies addressing economic inequality and critiqued globalization's effects on working-class Americans. Despite not being a formal member of the Democratic Party, he pushed a progressive, reformist agenda, often opposing the Democratic Party establishment.
In contrast, only Hillary Clinton made it to the ballot for the primary in Washington, D.C. This, combined with the scheduling of debates, has led many to view the DNC's handling of the primary process as biased towards Clinton and dismissive of Sanders.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, DNC Chairwoman Anita Bonds has called for an emergency meeting of the D.C. Council to address the concerns. The incident, while once dismissed as a "minor dispute", is now widely recognised as a significant and overt indication of intent that requires immediate attention.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fairness and impartiality in the democratic process, and the need for the DNC to uphold these values in future elections.
