Demonstration against job cuts at Porsche's affiliate company
In a move that highlights growing concerns over the transition towards a more sustainable future, Fridays for Future, the global climate movement, has announced a demonstration against planned layoffs at Cellforce, a high-performance battery producer for electric vehicles owned by Porsche.
The demonstration, scheduled for Monday, is in response to reports of mass layoffs at Cellforce, according to German news outlets Der Spiegel and Handelsblatt. The state group Baden-Württemberg of the climate protection movement announced the demonstration, with employees of Cellforce and the IG Metall trade union expected to participate.
Fridays for Future has been vocal in its criticism of federal politics for repeatedly questioning the combustion engine ban in 2035 and the "lack of transformation will" from Porsche. The movement believes that car manufacturers should move away from the combustion engine towards a climate-friendly economy and mobility.
The announcement comes on the heels of Porsche's ambitious E-strategy, led by CEO Oliver Blume. However, Fridays for Future criticizes the lack of action towards ensuring a socially just mobility transition, stating that the planned layoffs send a "disastrous signal" in a time of escalating climate crisis.
The climate movement supports the demand of the employees of Cellforce to wait for the planned works council elections. They urge Porsche to take the employees along in the transition, ensuring a fair and just approach to the shift towards electric vehicles.
The demonstration on Monday aims to bring attention to the plight of the affected employees and the need for a more sustainable and equitable approach to the transition towards electric mobility. Fridays for Future continues to push for a fossil regression, believing that it is possible through federal politics and the actions of companies like Porsche.
