Demonstration in Support of Palestine during Venice Film Festival's Perimeter

The Venice Film Festival has once again become a platform for discussing the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the film "The Voice of Hind Rajab" adding fuel to the already heated debate. Directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, the film tells the story of a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed in the Gaza Strip.

In competition at the festival, "The Voice of Hind Rajab" has been met with international criticism over the high number of civilian casualties during the Gaza war. Thousands of people participated in a pro-Palestinian demonstration during the festival, with the initiative "Venice 4 Palestine" being a significant part of the protest.

Protesters held a sign at the beginning of the march reading "Stop the Genocide," as South Africa has filed a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip. The application for an indictment against Israel was made in January 2024, with the ICC ruling that Israel must take immediate measures to prevent acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention. However, the ICC has yet to decide whether genocide has been committed.

Israel, on the other hand, claims self-defense following the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. The Israeli government, along with the German government, has rejected the genocide accusation.

Last year's Golden Lion winner, Giorgos Lanthimos, showed his support for the Palestinian cause by wearing a pin with the colours of the Palestinian flag during his appearances at the festival.

The film's premiere is set for September 3, and it promises to be a powerful addition to the ongoing discussion about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With its heart-wrenching story and timely subject matter, "The Voice of Hind Rajab" is sure to spark further debate and reflection on the complex and sensitive issues at hand.
