Denmark summons U.S. diplomat over Greenland matter; Washington maintains its position regarding Greenland's sovereignty respect.
In a recent development, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has expressed disapproval towards alleged American attempts to influence Greenland's future. The concerns stem from reports that at least three US officials close to President Trump have been involved in activities aimed at creating division with Denmark and gathering information on past issues between Greenland and Denmark.
According to the Danish public broadcaster DR, these activities were carried out by individuals connected to Donald Trump who secretly attempted to influence Greenland. The report also identified Greenlandic nationals sympathetic to Trump's plan to annex Greenland. However, the names of these individuals have not been publicly disclosed.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen acknowledged foreign interest in Greenland and its position in the Kingdom of Denmark. In a statement made to news agency AFP on Wednesday, Rasmussen stated that any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the kingdom would be unacceptable. He also requested a meeting with the US charge d'affaires at the ministry of foreign affairs.
The U.S. government, on the other hand, has remained silent on the matter. The U.S. State Department had a "productive conversation" during a meeting with Mark Stroh, the Charge d'Affaires, and Danish and Greenlandic officials in Copenhagen. However, no new comments were made regarding the allegations. The U.S. government also declined to comment on intelligence matters.
Greenland, aware of continued foreign attempts to influence its future, has made it clear that it expects diplomatic rules and international law to be respected. Nielsen reiterated that Greenland is a partner and ally, and its sovereignty and self-determination are paramount.
The U.S. government, for its part, has maintained that it respects the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own future. However, it also emphasised that the U.S. government does not control or direct the actions of private citizens.
As the investigation continues, tensions remain high between the U.S. and Greenland over the allegations of interference. Both parties will need to navigate this delicate situation carefully to maintain diplomatic relations and respect the sovereignty of Greenland.
