Denmark's Rejsekort app introduces modified privacy option in response to backlash
Rejsekort App Update Enhances Data Privacy
The popular Rejsekort app, used for paying fares on public transport services in Denmark, has received an update that allows users to set the location access option to "While using the app." This change comes after criticism from data experts and the Danish Data Protection Agency, who had pointed out that the previous setting allowed the app to access location data at all times.
The new setting was confirmed by Rejsekort og Rejseplan, the company that owns the app. According to Jens Willars, the director for customer services at Rejsekort og Rejseplan, the app will function identically to before but with the additional data privacy option. This means that users of the iPhone version of the Rejsekort app can now set the location access option to access their location only while the app is open.
The issue of the Rejsekort app accessing location data at all times, even when not in use, had been observed by readers of The Local. The Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet) had also criticized the Rejsekort app for not having the "While using the app" location access option available previously.
However, Android users were not affected by the issue and have always been able to restrict the app's access to data location when not in use. The Rejsekort app's developer has coded the settings to prevent location data access when not in use.
It's worth noting that the new data privacy setting on the Rejsekort app does not affect the validity check during travel. Previously, the Rejsekort company stated that it was not possible to enable the location access setting on the app without making it impossible to check if a ticket was valid during travel.
The Rejsekort app update was reported by news wire Ritzau and broadcaster DR. In addition to the new data privacy feature, the Rejsekort app now allows users to check in dogs, bikes, and fellow passengers, as reported in a separate article.
Jens Willars also stated that data from customers had not been accessed while they were not using the app. The company that introduced the new option allowing users of the Rejsekort app to enable location storage only while using the app is Rejsekort A/S.
The update was tested on 135,000 Rejsekort app users before being rolled out. The addition of the new setting was reported by news wire Ritzau and broadcaster DR.
In conclusion, the Rejsekort app update brings a much-needed enhancement to data privacy, allowing users to control when their location data is accessed. This update is a step towards addressing concerns raised by data experts and the Danish Data Protection Agency, ensuring a more secure and user-friendly experience for all Rejsekort app users.
