Dense Atmosphere Spotted at Opel Site

Opel, the seventh best-selling brand in Germany during the first half of the year, is making significant changes under its new leadership. The termination of the fuel cell project, affecting 130 engineers, could be a sign of these cost-cutting measures.

The fuel cell project's end might indicate a focus on cost-cutting by Opel, as the company strives for profitable growth, a priority stated by its spokesperson. This shift in strategy could impact the brand's future growth, as Opel aims to sell around 600,000 new cars worldwide in 2024, a significant decrease compared to sales in the 1990s in Germany alone.

Marketing manager Huettl, who took over sales and marketing leadership of Opel in early 2022, has been focusing on cost-cutting measures. The advertising campaign for the new Opel Grandland, available since the end of 2022, was developed by Jung von Matt, a move that was announced in 2022 when Opel awarded its advertising budget to the agency following a pitch.

The new Grandland, available in both electric and hybrid versions, is being offered with high discounts to boost sales. It is available for leasing for around 130 euros for the electric version and 120 euros for the hybrid, with no initial payment.

Opel's new CEO, Antonio Filosa, has taken over the reins, but the impact on the brand's future investments is uncertain. Under his leadership, it remains unclear to what extent Huettl can invest in the Opel brand.

In comparison to Opel, other Stellantis brands, such as Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Jeep in the USA, Peugeot and Citroën in France, and Fiat in Italy, have been more successful in various markets. Alfa Romeo, for instance, saw a significant sales increase of 39%, while Opel saw a more modest growth of 7.1%.

Despite these challenges, an Opel employee described the pricing of the new Grandland as "quite aggressive," suggesting a competitive edge in the market. The brand's future remains uncertain, but with a focus on cost-cutting and aggressive pricing strategies, Opel is undoubtedly making moves to regain its position in the automotive industry.
