Desires expedited transformation in citizens' retirement benefits, advocated by Merz
In a significant development, the Federal Chancellor, Friedrich Merz (CDU), has announced a planned comprehensive reform of the citizen's income by the end of the year. This reform, aimed at striking a balance between promotion and demand, is expected to agree on key points within this year, leading to a swift reform of the citizen's income.
The reform efforts involve both the government coalition and negotiations with opposition parties, with key roles played by political leaders and committees at the federal level. At the heart of these discussions are the four party leaders of the coalition, who will focus specifically on the citizen's income reform.
Chancellor Merz and Social Minister Barbara Bas, who agree on the need for welfare state reform, have been at the forefront of these discussions. Bas, who has never opposed reforming the citizen's income, has been cautious about saving five billion euros from the citizen's income. However, she prioritizes maintaining jobs and stimulating the economy.
Merz, on the other hand, supports maintaining the welfare state's most important functions while controlling misuse and encouraging people to enter or return to the labor market. Both leaders are willing to have sharp words, but their meetings, such as the recent conciliatory meeting before the coalition committee, have been marked by mutual understanding and a shared commitment to the reform.
The Social State Commission, initiated on Monday, will examine state benefits quickly to help shape the reform. The exact details of the planned reform of the Bürgergeld will be developed by Minister Bas under pressure from Chancellor Merz and the CDU/CSU coalition partners. Bas expects the Union and SPD to implement necessary social reforms.
With the aim of bundling benefits to save overall costs, the Social State Commission will play a crucial role in the reform process. The reform, once implemented, is expected to bring about a more efficient and effective welfare state that encourages employment and supports those in need.
