Despite campus closure due to the storm, Valentine's Day festivities still mark the occasion among the students
In the heart of February, Holy Cross University was bustling with a variety of events celebrating love and friendship.
From February 6th to 7th, The Singing Valentines, one of Holy Cross' a capella groups, offered students the chance to purchase songs for their friends. This traditional offering was a popular choice, adding a musical touch to the festivities.
On the same week, Professor Susan Elizabeth Sweeney hosted a Literary Social and Valentine Workshop in the Levis Browsing Room of the Dinand Library. An enthusiastic group of 16 students attended, enjoying the opportunity to make valentines, read love poems, and enjoy refreshments.
As the week progressed, the campus was also home to the Roses and Candy Gram Sale, scheduled for February 13th. However, due to the campus closure, the event was held online instead.
The campus closure also affected HerCampus' candy-gram sale in honor of Valentine's Day and Galentine's Day. Despite the setback, the spirit of the occasion was not dampened, as the event was successfully transitioned to an online platform.
Amidst these events, the HIV/AIDS Research Symposium was held at Rehm Library from November 29th to December 2nd. This symposium, while not directly related to Valentine's Week, showcased the university's commitment to important research and academic pursuits.
In the spirit of raising awareness, the Student Government Association held a Sexual Respect week from February 12th to 16th. Various events aimed at promoting sexual respect were organised during this week.
On a lighter note, it seems that even the residents of Townhouse 1F got into the Valentine's spirit, decorating their main living room area with Christmas lights, tassels, and candy canes.
Written by Matt Nickerson '24, Chief Features Editor, this article serves as a reflection of the diverse and engaging activities that took place during Valentine's Week at Holy Cross.
One of the unsung heroes of these events was Cathi Gallant, also known as Kimball Cathi, a Dining Services employee at Holy Cross who has worked there for 20 years. While her favourite colour remains unknown, her love for music is clear, with Queen being her favourite singer/group, and "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars her favourite song. Her favourite movie is "Miracle in the Rain".
On a more sombre note, Professor Jorge Santos hosted an "Anti-Valentine" Open Mic Night in the Levis Room in Dinand Library on February 14th. This event provided a platform for those who might not traditionally celebrate Valentine's Day to share their thoughts and feelings.
As we look back on this eventful week, it's clear that Holy Cross once again managed to blend tradition with innovation, creating a unique and engaging experience for its students.
